The target is lit...fire away.

Have you got a question you'd like to ask the Tunbridge Wells first team management? If you've got a reasonable question to ask, don't hold back, email Steve Gibbons at [email protected] and have it answered in this column!

Mark Wyver Asked: With the club searching for new signings for next season will this be a county wide search or just around the local Tunbridge Wells area?

Gibbo:  We have spoken to lots of players both from all over the county some who are playing for Kent league and Southern league standard sides but unfortunately money always comes into it. Its difficult to sell the club to players if they won't come training to see what not only the team has to offer but also what strides the club are making off the pitch to improve not only the football side of it but the whole experience of playing for the club. They need to see it for themselves and apart from dragging them down to the ground by the scruff of their necks you can only do so much. We have had players approach the club but they don't seem to have the stomach for the fight as the kent league is a very tough league and if you're not ready for it then its easy to get muscled out.Having said thet some of the youth team players look very good...keep it under your hat though or Gary Sharman will have a go at me.

Matt asked: I'm particularly interested in what budget IS set aside to attract them to Culverden - something we don't seem to have, and from the vibes I've picked up during the last few seasons the budget has been pretty evenly allocated between the players. What are your views on putting aside a majority of the existing budget to get a goalscorer in?

GibboTough question, obviously i can't divulge the current budget but i can say that it is less than we inherited last season although its not intended to be used as an excuse. I think at this level it affects morale if you bring in a mercenary on high money to just put the ball in the back of the net, if every player was getting (for example) £10 a week each and a striker came in with the carrot being dangled of £50 then it would be causing more problems if the player failed to deliver. But proven goalscorers in the top levels are worth their weight in gold, but its very hit and miss (no pun intended) at this level, so keeping a happy ship is more important when the wages are not at the top end of the scale. Try telling the boys when they travel away to Deal that the money they would normally be getting to fill their cars with petrol to cover their travelling expenses is being given to the striker who hasn't scored again but he has a few quid in his pocket...

Andy Thompson asked: What does it take to break into the top 5 or 6 in the Kent League, apart from spending a lot of money or having a side that's been together for many years?

Gibbo: Looking at the end of the season last year i'd have confidently answered the question but seeing the start we have made then i'm not so sure!! To be in the top 5 or 6 you have to have some money (not necessarily loads) but its no surprise that the top  clubs have money to entice players. The players who maybe don't fancy the travelling of the higher leagues. Or perhaps their work situation is not flexible enough to warrant the time out required to play at the higher levels but they still want to play at a fairly decent standard. You need to have the ability to turn games other sides would draw into wins, and the bad day at the office games that usually end up in a defeat into draws. You need to have a home ground that no-one ever wins at.The sort of squad that can adapt to the rushing out of an evening after work and still be able to turn in a performance. All that and a fair bit of luck, but as a famous golfer once said "the more i practice the luckier i get"
