Wells Put Stick in Dockers' Spokes

Erith Town rolled into town with a 100% win record and no goals conceded from their opening six league games. They left Culverden with two points dropped and a goal in the 'against' column as Tunbridge Wells fought hard and well to take a 1-1 draw from their high-flying visitors.

Andy McMath put the home side deservedly a goal to the good six minutes before the interval - and The Wells held out until fifteen minutes from time when Craig levelled up for the visitors.

"I was pleased with the performance on what was a difficult day in the heat," first team manager Martin Larkin told www.tunbridgewellsfc.co.uk. "Erith are a good side and I thought it was a very even game. In the first half we pressed well and got our rewards with the goal, second half we decided to drop off and allow them to have the ball in their own half and make sure we condensed the space in ours and look to hit them on the break. This worked really well and we kept them to very little in the way of shooting opportunities.

"It was disappointing, therefore, to concede from a corner which we are normally very good at - and secondly, it was disappointing that we didn’t add to our goal tally in the second half. We had a few break-aways and enjoyed some time spent in their half but we failed to convert the chances. All-in-all, the point a piece was a fair outcome.

"On the player side of things,  we gave Josh Stanford his debut on the left and he looked very good. He reminds us a little of Alex Flisher who was here two years ago in that he is very direct and quick. He hasn’t played for a while, so suffered with fitness but we will work on that. Stuart Copeland was excellent in goal. He also hasn’t played for a while, but with Chris at a wedding, he dropped his coaching role for the day and did very well – no doubt he will be talking the keepers through it at training this week! We look a little light up top with Jack banned, so we are making a few enquiries to see if we can strengthen our options there.

"Scott Whibley has returned from Erith & Belvedere to add competition at the back, with James Russell struggling still with an injury.”
