Wells Take Points Off Kent League New Boys

Sometimes life smiles. Coming off the back of a run of three defeats (and with the opposition having enjoyed an upturn in form following a shaky start), Rochester United was potentially looking like a tricky place to go. Truth be told, however, only mugs read too much into preceding results. If football was predictable, it would draw far less interest on a global scale. And that's the case even in the macro-world (globally speaking) of Kent.

Tunbridge Wells began brightly and within 10 minutes Jon Pilbeam had put the visitors into the lead - a margin that The Wells held onto for the remainder of the half. The begining of the second period was symetry in motion, and the same scorer was on target to double the lead, again 10 minutes into the half.

Although Rochester's hotshot Stuart Zanone was on target for the home side 10 minutes from time, Tunbridge Wells had more than enough in their reserves to hold out and propel themselves back up the Kent League table.

“I was happy with the result, the pitch was superb so it didn’t come as a surprise," said first team boss, Martin Larkin afterwards. "I think the Rochester guys have now learnt not to pay too much attention to results in the Kent League!

"We were very good for the first 70 mins. We did what we do best getting in behind and delivering crosses. Andy McMath was excellent in the middle of the park and Jon Pilbeam took his goals very well. In the end, I was disappointed not to take a clean sheet from that game. We had warned the guys about Zanone and he had one chance and scored with it - but we saw the game out without too much panic.

"We now have a very testing month with Erith Town and VCD visiting us in the next few weeks. On the subject of VCD Athletic, I'm delighted to say that Jack Harris has opted to stay with us following a seven-day approach from them. Now it's time to move onwards and upwards as a team."
