20/05/2007 - Budget - Martin Speaks!

Tunbridge Wells manager Martin Farnie is keeping faith with the squad that finished their Kent League campaign in the bottom three - but begins the search for new strikers to turn around their fortunes, writes Stephen McCartney of www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

The former Dartford coach spent a day with incoming new owner Gary Stevens, watching Thamesmead Town lift the Kent League Cup with a 3-0 win over Whitstable Town at Folkestone Invicta’s Buzzlines Stadium fifteen days ago.

“We had a meeting at the cup final, we spent a day together and chatted through stuff,” Farnie revealed in an EXCLUSIVE interview with www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

He added: “I know where I’m going with the budget and stuff (and) I am happy.

“It ain’t going to be a great difference from what I had last year to be honest, but there’s other bits of pieces from there.”

Farnie believes the experienced players that finished last season - and new faces - will improve matters at Culverden Stadium next term.

“There’s about three or four I want to add to it,” he said. “Until I speak to them and see their availability, and see their expenses, I have to see if I get them or not.

“We had a good team at the end (of last season), but I’d like to add a couple of forwards to the squad - that’s what I’m looking for.”

Farnie said that he’ll be contacting his players to see if they want to stay at the west Kent club next season.

He said: “Probably start this week, have a chat with most of the players (but) most of the players have gone away.

“I’ve still got the same lads from last year. None of them have told me they’re leaving.”

But whilst Kent clubs higher up in the football pecking order unveil their retained lists, the Kent League transfer market is a lot more quieter at this time of the year as players tend to settle their futures around pre-season training.

“No-one’s committed themselves yet,” explained Farnie, whose side return to pre-season training on Saturday, 30th June.

“They’re all seeing whose paying them the most money - so I’ve got plenty of time.”

But any new faces will have to stay for the long-haul.

“I’ll just have a chat with them and try to say what we are trying to achieve over the next three to four seasons,” said Farnie.

“I want people to come here with a bit of life in them but not come here for a season and disappear.

“I want players who are young and hungry for it.”

Also on Farnie’s wish-list is a suitable training venue.

15/05/2007 - Friendlies Announced

Tunbridge Wells FC is pleased to announce five pre-season friendlies including one for the reserves.

The Wells first team will be in action against four Ryman League sides before its own Kent League season gets under way. Discussions are ongoing with other clubs regarding additional fixtures.

When the first team plays at Whitstable, the Oystermen's reserves make the opposite journey as Wells attempt to build a squad capable of improving on last season's basement position.

Full details can be seen in the fixtures section of this website.

09/05/2007 - Youth Team Trials

Next season Tunbridge Wells will field three youth teams in the Kent Youth League, including an under 14s, 15s & 18s side. A trial for the Under 14s side takes place on Thursday 10th May, 6.30pm start. Phone 01892 617140 or email [email protected] for further details.

More information will be posted regarding trials for the Under 15s and Under 18s as soon as we have it.

04/05/2007 - Gary Speaks...

You may or may not have seen Gary Stevens’ article in this weeks Courier so Gary has requested that we reproduce it here on the TWFC web site. Gary is keen to hear from any interested parties with views or opinions about his plans and what indeed they would like to see happen at TWFC. Please email [email protected]

The summer months might not provide too many games to watch at your local club but there will be frantic action behind the scenes.

Steve Bruce was asked if he was looking forward to a more relaxed spell having gained promotion back into the Premiership only to puff out his cheeks and claim “the work starts now”.

Well the next 3 months or so will be extremely busy for me too. The final legal matters surrounding my acquisition of Tunbridge Wells FC are being concluded and then I can get started.

A certain amount of preparation has already taken place but nothing particularly visible so people are wondering what’s going on.

I’ve already spoken to most of those currently involved at the club and they’re all keen to continue their association and hard work. The manager, Martin Farnie, knows the squad of players he would like for next season with pre season training and match dates already pencilled in.

The Reserve and Youth teams are still fulfilling fixtures but once they’re concluded then a similar exercise will take place. The Under 18’s are off to play in the World Youth Tournament in Sweden this summer, what an opportunity, thanks in no small part to generous sponsorship from TWHI Trade.

Sponsorship and support from local business will play an important part in the success of TWFC going forward and an information pack is being produced itemising various opportunities for those wishing to have an association with the club.

We’ll also have an Under 14 and Under 15 team playing in the Kent Youth League next season with initial trials this month on Friday 4 and Thursday 10 May. Interested players should email [email protected] or phone 01892 617140.

The ladies team, which is an important part of the club, has had a fine inaugural season and needs to be further developed and linked more closely to the club and Culverden Stadium.

A club house is the life blood of any semi professional team. Once the appropriate permissions have been received then a certain amount of improvement is planned both inside and out. Regular functions and activities will be staged to draw people down to a fabulous location that will boast enhanced facilities.

The turnstiles and entrance to the ground from the car park needs some revision and will be done before the first home friendly.

The pitch at Culverden Stadium has been a real problem over the years and some remedial work is required but it won’t be until this time next year that a new surface will be a serious consideration. Similar applies to the changing rooms as much as we need the improvements now.

Eventually a smarter entrance from Culverden Down and an upgrade of the current driveway and car park will take place but that’s a touch further down the line.

A real priority is a training facility for when the evenings draw in and the weather deteriorates but there are few options in the area. How can Martin develop a pattern of play and team understanding if he can’t work with his players between games.

An office will be established at the ground that we can actively work from and administer the club. There is little awareness of TWFC in and around Tunbridge Wells so a campaign to market and increase the clubs profile will be rolled out slowly.

I doubt if 1% of the population of Tunbridge Wells has ever been to the Culverden Stadium to watch a match or attend a function. You have to ask why?

We’ll be working more closely with local schools, youth teams and other organisations for mutual benefit. There are few choices for better players to play above the Crowborough and District or Tandridge Youth leagues so TWFC will be offering that with access into the Kent Youth League via our senior status.

I won’t bore you with important matters such as insurance along with health and safety to mention a few. The list goes on for about a mile and all of them need to be covered.

My traditional summer holiday in Spain might be cancelled this year.

21/03/2007 - Brace Yourselves...!

Brace yourselves! The fruit of all those postponements over the winter months is about to hit home. The fixtures schedule for April (and now May) has been released, and can be viewed here.

The first team needs to fit 10 matches in before the end of April, while the reserves have to play their 12 remaining league matches by Bank Holiday Monday on May 7th. And that doesn't include six additional home matches that need to be played by the U18's - five of which need to be scheduled, and details of which will be posted at the following link, once known...

So in total, Culverden will stage 20 further matches in two months - a feast of entertainment for supporters to be fattening up on before the summer withdrawal symptoms hit in during the close season.

Loads of games, loads of goals?

12/03/2007 - Statement from Gary Stevens

“Firstly I was delighted with the attendance at the EGM of Tunbridge Wells FC on Thursday 8 March 2007 which allowed a vote to take place in line with the clubs constitution and rules.

My proposal was voted for at a rate of 8 to 1 in favour and I’m delighted to now have the opportunity to deliver.

My proposal covers many areas of the club including but not solely the pitch, changing rooms, club house, car park, entrance and of course the status and standing of the First, Reserves, Youth and Ladies teams.

It will certainly take time and a lot of hard work and resources but when we look back at March 2007 in years to come we will all see the progress made.

An initial frustration is that certain legal matters must now be completed before my initial investment into the club can commence but this should only be a few weeks. I have, however, already started to move certain matters forward and believe good early progress can be made on a number of fronts.

The exiting Committee/Board have been tireless in their work for the club and have valuable roles to play going forward as have the current members, players, coaches and management.

Everyone associated with the club will be kept advised as we move onwards and upwards in a controlled and business like manor both on and off the pitch”.

09/03/2007 - STEVENS WIN THE DAY

Gary Stevens carried last night's vote at the EGM by a whopping 62-8 and will now take overall control of Tunbridge Wells FC in the summer.

There is a large amount of documentation and reporting towade through between now and then and we shall endeavour to keep everyone up to date with progress.

Gary will be bringing a statement to www.tunbridgewellsfc.co.uk very shortly.

23/02/2007 - Fixture Changes

A number of changes have been made to the fixtures for March as the first and reserve teams catch up on the spate of postponements over the November-January period.

The latest fixture list revision can be found online here

19/02/2007 - George Piper - RIP

It is with sadness that The Wells learned of George Piper's death. Aged 100, George was a long-standing servant of the club, and was it's physio well in to his 70s. A minute's silence was held at all Kent League matches over the weekend.

19/02/2007 - Rodgers Injured

The visit to Whitstable Town was called to an early halt by the match referee after The Wells' veteran goalkeeper Alan Rodgers picked up a nasty head/neck injury following a collision with an onrushing Whitstable forward. Rodgers was consequently taken to hospital in an ambulence.

Ironically, Rodgers made his debut at home to The Oysterboys in December, replacing Jimmy Simpson who had picked up a serious injury in that match.

We wish Alan a speedy recovery, and will endeavor to update you on his injury, once we have further news.
