Wells Win League Games Too

There's always a danger that the game following an occasion like Saturday might resemble 'after the Lord Mayor's Show', and one suspects that's exactly what Beckenham hoped would be the case when they rolled into town on a Tuesday night that offered Manchester United v Real Madrid on the TV from the comfort of your living room. Beckenham have twice beaten The Wells this year, and with the away fixture producing a 4-5 defeat and the Tunbridge Wells Twitter feed promising more entertainment than the fare being served up on the TV, its fair to say the assembled crowd of just over 100 probably went home believing they had picked the right option.

It took 12 minutes for the visitors to break the deadlock when Danny Tipple hit the net. It took an additional 60 seconds for Tunbridge Wells to take the centre, pour downfield, and supply Jack Harris with the ball, and for him to rifle home for the equaliser. Two goals in the space of a minute proved to be the sum total of the goal-scoring in the first period and both sides headed in to the break locked at 1-1 - although The Wells had looked dangerous moving forward and felt they might have been in the lead.

Again, the scoring for the second period was confined to a relatively concentrated spell just 15 minutes from the end. Josh Stanford scored for The Wells after 75 minutes, before Tom Davey extended the lead to 3-1 after 83. In a reverse mirror image of the first half, Beckenham then scored almost instantly through ex-Wells forward Elstrom Die to make for a tight last 7 minutes. The Wells held out and won 3-2 to move seventh in the table.

"I'm really happy with the Beckenham win," manager Martin Larkin told www.tunbridgewellsfc.co.uk afterwards. "We hadn’t played a home league game for a long time, and it felt strange walking out at night with a very different sized crowd in the ground. It took us a while to get going, but once we did we really should have scored three or four in the first half. I was happy we responded so quickly to their goal, and in the way we closed the game out when they scored their second.

"The fixture list is so packed with 20 games in 48 days that it really is all about the winning at the moment, and that's what we need to do every three or four days now to make sure we climb the table."
