Leafe Game Stained By Autumn Reds

Tunbridge Wells' 100% away record came to an end with a goalless draw at Whyteleafe on Saturday. The biggest talking point came on the half-hour mark when both sides were reduced to 10 men. Joe Fuller went in slightly late for 50-50 ball with the Whyteleafe goalkeeper to which a Whyteleafe defender took exception, shoving his head into Jon Pilbeam's face in the ensuing scuffle. That action earned him his marching orders, before bizarrely the red card was also flashed in Pilbeam's direction too. Nobody quite understood why.

Tunbridge Wells played out the rest of the game creating several good oportunities while the defence did a great job shutting the home side out - but unfortunately for the visitors, they were unable to capitalise on any of the chances.

"I'm still trying to come to terms with what happened in the first half," Martin Larkin told www.tunbirdgewellsfc.co.uk a few days after the game. "Joe was a little late on their keeper but was entitled to challenge for the ball considering the keeper had dropped two or three balls already in the first half. Their No. 5 took exception and raised his hands. He
then thrust his head into Jon Pilbeam’s face and was subsequently sent off for a head butt. After some complaining from their players, the referee sent off Jon for a head butt too!

"Our frustration comes in that we now lose Jon for three games when he didn’t do anything wrong.

"The game was 10 against 10 for over an hour, and although we created 5 or 6 chances we didn’t put the ball in the back of the net. Defensively we were superb and Whyteleafe failed to hit the
target in the whole game - but it is very disappointing that for the second time this season we have blanked in front of goal in the game after scoring six, which isn’t good enough and we will be looking to see how that can be fixed this week."
