17/12/2009 - Second Youth Player Signs

Tunbridge Wells FC has continued its recent policy of signing promising U16 players on First team forms with the signing of defender and youth team captain, Ben Williamson. As with the signing of Ryan Waterman, this latest signing represents a continued commitment to building a side based around local players, while also encouraging the best local players to develop and progress in Senior football.

Like Waterman, Williamson has been training with the first team, and getting a taste for what is involved being a part of the first team set-up, and his potential hasn’t gone un-noticed.

“Ben is an exceptional young talent,” Martin Larkin revealed. “He has been scoring goals from right back for the U16s, and is another one who is training well with the first team squad. He definitely has a bright future if he continues to apply himself as he has been.”

Having put pen to paper at the weekend, Williamson is looking forward to the prospect of developing with the Culverden club. “Being signed for Tunbridge Wells’ First Team gives me a great opportunity to play at a higher level and to improve my football,” he anticipated.

During the five years that he has been working with him, current Tunbridge Wells U16 coach Darrell Cousins is confident Williamson will progress in Senior football.

“Ben was originally a Pembury player who always impressed when I watched him play at the age of 11. He played in the midfield for them, and was also selected for the Crowborough League representative side. Ben is the kind of player you're glad to have on your side - he always gives everything. His fitness is exceptional and over the years he has grown in confidence.

“I decided to switch him to right back, and this really seemed to bring out his potential. He is a tremendous attacking full back, and is our second top goal scorer for the season.

“Training with the senior players has moved him up another gear, and we thank Martin Larkin and his coaching staff for the opportunity they have given all the players. Ben has still got to progress a little, but as he is always willing to learn. I’m sure he will advance to senior football. Ben deserves everything that he achieves. It has been a pleasure to have had him in my squad for the last five years.”

09/12/2009 - Wells Snap Up Davey

Tunbridge Wells FC have signed Tom Davey from Ryman League side Chatham Town. A central midfielder, Davey can also play on the left wing or as a left back.

“We are delighted to have beaten off a couple of clubs to sign him,” first team manager Martin Larkin told www.tunbridgewellsfc.co.uk. “Having spoken to the Chatham Town secretary they are upset to lose him, but his current work commitments make the extra travelling needed in the Ryman League difficult for him.

“Tom has an exceptional youth record, including playing for England Schoolboys - and he will add a real quality to our side. His Ryman League experience will be valuable to the team, and he is a left footed player, so he should add some further balance to the side. He also has great passing ability. I hope supporters will all join me in welcoming him to the club when they get the opportunity.”

As well as playing for Chatham and England Schoolboys (Under 18 level), during his time at University, Davey also played for Nuneaton Borough.

30/11/2009 - Waterman Debuts For Kent Youth

Ryan Waterman featured for the Kent U16 Representative side against the AFA U16s at Faversham Town on Thursday night. He started the match and played his part in the 3-1 win. Darrell Cousins was watching from the sidelines, and observed: "After coming to terms with the pace of the game, he settled down and played well for the remainder of the time he was on the pitch.

This was the first win for the side I went to watch, and he did Tunbridge Wells proud. He is the first player to play Rep youth football for Tunbridge Wells FC. Let's hope more will follow."

16/11/2009 - WATERMAN PROMOTED FROM U16s

Tunbridge Wells FC are delighted to announce the signing of Ryan Waterman who becomes the first player to step into the First Team squad from a promising crop of U16s Youth Team players.

First team manager Martin Larkin was brimming with enthusiasm as Waterman put pen to paper at the weekend: “Ryan is an exceptional talent and we are very pleased with his progress so far.

“This is a reward for the performances he has put in during youth team games and during the first team training sessions where he has impressed the entire coaching staff and all of the players.

“Ryan is getting to the age where exposure to adult football will benefit his progress. We won’t be silly with him putting him straight into games, but we will be using him in games where the situation of the match allows. Ryan is a great credit to both his parents and the coaching team that have helped him progress at the club over the last four years.”

For the past 18-months, select members of the U15s and now the U16s have been training with the first team (Ryan among them) to help their game mature, as well as gaining match-day experience sitting on the bench as an un-named sub to give them a general sense of what is involved in senior football. Having turned 16, though, Ryan is now eligible to be more directly involved on match days.

Commenting on signing first team forms, Waterman added, “I very much appreciate the support Tunbridge Wells has given me over the last two to three years. I am proud and privileged to be signing for the senior squad, and I would like to thank Martin and the rest of the coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to train with the first team squad. The players have made me and my team mates welcome at every session we have attended.

“I would also like to thank Darrell Cousins and the U16 coaches for all the support and encouragement they have given me. I will keep working hard and hope to progress over the next few years.”

Ryan was picked for the Kent U16 Youth League Representative side earlier in the season - earning a commendation for his attitude throughout the selection trials.

U16 coach Darrell Cousins, understandably proud to see the progress of his protégé recollected, “Ryan joined me four years ago when I was in charge of Foresters FC. He came in from Pembury, and although stepping up a level, right from the start from the heart of the midfield Ryan just kept putting in excellent performances. His passing and work-rate went up a notch, as well as his ability to analyse his own game to see where he could improve. Something about him just stood out.

“Our first season as Tunbridge Wells’ U14s side in the Kent Youth League was a step up for all, but Ryan seemed to relish the challenge and showed signs of maturity that made his all-round game come together. Ryan has also matured as a person since then, recognizing the need for extra fitness, and taking it on himself to do extra running at night to achieve this.

“His understanding of the game was the part that improved the most over the years I’ve worked with him. Training a few times with the first team was of great value for him as he regularly attended the first team and reserve team home and away games. Ryan has progressed because he wants to learn, he loves his football - and is totally committed.

“It’s been an honour to coach him over the years, and I hope others can see what can be achieved when you are as committed as he is. He thoroughly deserves his chance with the first team squad now.”

02/11/2009 - Whibley Joins The Wells

Following the departure of James Russell, Tunbridge Wells manager Martin Larkin unveiled the signing of Scott Whibley at home to Deal Town on Saturday.

"Scott started the season with Crowborough, and is a powerful centre half who is deceptively quick. He made a superb start to his career with us on Saturday and he comes across as someone who is hungry to learn. I'm sure he will do well."
