11/09/2009 - U16s: Lane Offers Bumpy Start For Wells

Tunbridge Wells U16s 2-4 Long Lane U16s
Tunbridge Wells 16s started their 2009/10 season last Sunday with a home game against last year’s runners-up Long Lane, who traditionally have been a hard fixture. This occasion was to provide no break with tradition…

Long Lane came out of the traps as quick as lightening, and closed The Wells down, giving them no chance to get into their stride - and the Culverden side soon found themselves a goal down after a long ball over the top caught the defence square, allowing the visiting forward to put the ball past the wells keeper.

Lane continued to close The Wells down, but with chances not being taken it allowed the home side to get a foothold in the game, and with Jack Huke chasing down the defender who then collided with his own keeper, Huke with the ball at his feet dispatched the ball into an empty net for 1-1.

The celebrations were short-lived though, and within a minute Tunbridge Wells were behind 1-2 after some sloppy defending. And worse was to come when Long Lane hit a third.

To The Wells’ credit they kept plugging away, and created some great chances. Had they been a little more clinical in front of goal, they could have got back to 3-3 before half time - but as it stood, the half ended 1-3 in Long Lane’s favour.

The second half saw a much better start, with The Wells taking the game to their opponents - but chances went begging, and with the defence not dealing with another long ball, putting it out for a throw instead of putting it down the channels, a speculative shot from the Long Lane throw seemed to squeeze under the Wells keeper for 1-4.

With a mountain to climb, the lads continued to play some attractive football, and when Ryan Waterman picked the ball up just outside the left edge of the penalty box, rounding a defender before unleashing a curling shot into the far corner, it gave the final score a little more respectability at 2-4.

“The lads must be commended on the second half performance, but must also be ready for the game from the start,” reflected coach Darrell Cousins after the game. “Take nothing away from Long Lane, though. They are a very good side and are one of the favourites to win this league."

The U16s host Margate at Culverden on Sunday in the League Cup - 11am.

07/09/2009 - U14s Start With Win

Rusthall B U14s 0-3 Tunbridge Wells U14s
The Youth League Season kicked off with a win for Tunbridge Wells U14s - and a convincing win too by 3-0 at local rivals Rusthall.

Th
e game started positively for The Wells, with George Budden and Connor Summerfield controlling the midfield, and it was pass from Summerfield in to the lively Jack Galvin that unlocked the defence. Quick thinking from Galvin brought Ben Carter into play at the far post and Carter coolly struck the ball home for 1-0.

Soon afterwards, some good interplay by Marcus Evans and Josh Howitt found Galvin who opened his account for the season with a slick finish on the turn. So at half time, The Wells went in 2-0 up.

Into the second period, The Wells' new-look back five were defending up the slope and found themselves under some sustained pressure - but they held firm. New goalkeeper Taylor Gable was in outstanding form and the defensive pairing of Fergus Kiely and Ryan Hinkson were performing at their best to keep a clean sheet.

With 15 minutes to go Budden opened his account for the season after a goalmouth scramble to add some extra gloss to an opening day victory.

Needless to say manager Paul Shipley was pleased with the result. "Opening the season with a win was pleasing enough, but to take the points with six players making their league debuts, following successful trials held at Culverden Stadium in May adds to the value of this win."

At Culverden, the U13s and U16s were both beaten, the U13s losing 0-2 to Tonbridge and the U16s losing 2-4 to Long Lane. While the U13s visit Bexley and the U14s travel to Phoenix Sports in League games next Sunday, the U16s quickly turn their attention to cup matters, Margate visiting Culverden in the Causeway Steel Challenge Cup First Round.

28/08/2009 - U14s Shape-Up For New Season

With the new season just over a week away for all three Youth teams at Tunbridge Wells, the U14s played host to Maidstone United at Culverden Stadium on August 26th for a friendly. Both sides agreed to play 4x20 minute matches, to allow their entire squads to gain match practice and try out different formations before their respective league campaigns begin on Sunday, 6th September.

Match 1 (0-0)

The game started positively for The Wells, who seemed to settle the better of the two sides. Manager Paul Shipley had seven players making their debuts for The Wells following the successful trials held back in May. Somehow, the opening 20 minutes remained goalless, but with plenty of goal-mouth action and all players putting in solid performances in humid conditions.

Match 2 (1-1)

Both teams rang the changes for the second match with Maidstone immediately benefiting, taking the lead following good approach-work down The Wells' right. Despite the set-back, Tunbridge Wells gathered their composure and played their way back into the game, levelling the scores at 1-1 after a tremendous solo effort from George Budden, who surged forward from within his own half to unleash a shot from fully 30-yards into the bottom left corner.

Match 3 (0-0)

Match three turned out to be a predictable affair with both teams changing players and positions to ensure all their players were utilised. The Wells new-look back five were now starting to gel with new goalkeeper Taylor Gable in outstanding form, and the ever-present Ryan Hinkson and Marcus Evans carrying their good form over from last year to ensuring the game remained level going into the last match.

Match 4 (1-0)

The final game was probably the best match of the four, with both teams pushing for a winner, whilst testing the summer fitness regimes to the full. A game of end-to-end action was essentially settled when a period of Tunbridge Wells pressure told, and new signing Seb Pettitt scored his first goal for the club with a shot from 25-yards hitting the back of the net before the impressive Maidstone goalkeeper could move. The Wells pressed hard to increase their lead with good efforts from Ben Carter and Jack Galvin being well saved.

The final whistle blew with the aggregate score being 2-1 to The Wells. The overall Man of the Match award was shared by George Budden & Connor Ward.

“We’d like thank all those who represented Maidstone United for making the evening such an enjoyable event, both on and off the pitch,” a statement from the U14 management team read. “We look forward to repeating the fixture in the near future. The players would also like to thank their kit sponsors Twyford bathrooms, and the Red Fort restaurant in East Peckham.”

This weekend, the Wells U14s travel to Crayford to take part in a ten-team 11-a-side tournament, before their final pre-season fixture next Wednesday.

25/08/2009 - LARRYTECH SIGNS FOR THE WELLS

Tunbridge Wells FC has secured a main sponsor for Season 2009/10. In a deal worth a four-figure sum, Larrytech Internet Services will be The Wells’ shirt sponsor, and fund the purchase of a new home kit and Adidas training kit for the squad.

“As a club we are delighted to welcome Larrytech on board,” Tunbridge Wells’ Manager Martin Larkin said. “In the current climate it is incredibly important that local businesses assist each other as much as possible. The new playing and training kit looks great, and we look forward to building a long-term relationship with Larrytech over the next few years.”

“We’re very much looking forward to the season ahead, and are very keen to build a long-term relationship with the club,” added Lawrence Hardcastle, Director, Larrytech. “We think supporting local sport is a great way to put Larrytech at the heart of the community - and it’s very clear from everyone we have met at the club that they are committed to being the best they can be, which fits very nicely with our own ethos.”

With tales of economic doom and gloom prevalent in the media, not least with lay-offs and pay-cuts being reported up and down the country, Mr. Hardcastle explained his company’s decision to sponsor the club at this time.

“It’s tough for everybody at the moment (non-league football hasn’t been immune from the bite of recession either), but I believe the only way forward in times of recession is for organisations to work together to improve their prospects. We pride ourselves on supporting our clients in the bad times as well as the good."

Based in the centre of Tunbridge Wells, Larrytech was founded by Hardcastle in 2001. An independent internet services provider and web design agency, Larrytech seeks to provide professional and insightful web and IT consultancy to a range of clients - and it’s that broad range of clients that the company will look to gain further exposure to through this sponsorship deal.

“We deal with a large range of clients, from very small companies up to large organisations,” Hardcastle outlined. “Being based in central Tunbridge Wells, we are able to cover the surrounding area - including London - and we have a broad service offering, from website design, to broadband, to graphic design, and we can adapt our services to fit the individual firms.”

04/08/2009 - Senior Trophy Draw

Tunbridge Wells recent record of attracting oposition from other leagues in the Kent Senior Trophy got no better this year as they landed a tough game in this year's competition. Herne Bay will visit Culverden in the Second Round.

The second round tie will take place on Saturday, December 12th with the winner booking a Quarter Final date at home to Beckenham Town/Holmesdale or West Wickham on Saturday, January 9th, 2010.

04/08/2009 - U16s Hold Charlton Academy

Tunbridge Wells U16s played Charlton’s Academy side as part of their pre-season build-up on July 23rd. With a squad of 15 players, Darrell Cousins, U16s coach, included two new signings and three triallists in the game that was specifically arranged to assess how far the side had come over the course of the last year.

The game started positively for The Wells and they seemed to settle the better of the two sides, playing some free-flowing football which was making their opponents work very hard. For the first twenty minutes the game was thoroughly enjoyable to watch, with all the players putting in a great performance. Tunbridge Wells took the lead when Jack Huke received the ball just inside the Charlton half, turned and played a peach-of-a-pass out to the right which found Abbas, and Abbas rounded a defender and smashed the ball into the roof of the net - 1-0.

Charlton responded with some neat football but didn't trouble The Wells defence, which was holding firm under the stewardship of captain Ben Williamson and Adam Carrick.

On the half-hour a flurry of substitutions from both sides seemed to slow the flow of the game down before The Wells began to gain the ascendancy again. Had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping from the Charlton Academy keeper, the visitors could have found themselves two or three goals to the good into the second period.

On the hour, more changes were made, again affecting The Wells’ flow more than Charlton’s, and this time within five minutes, Charlton leveled at 1-1. The equaliser seemed to give them some belief, and the Tunbridge Wells defence came under some pressure, but stood up to everything Charlton threw at them.

With 10 minutes remaining, The Wells could have hit a winner, but Mushed hit the bar, and from further Wells pressure the impressive Jack Harris had a couple of chances, only to be denied by the impressive Charlton keeper - so in the end, the whistle blew with honours even: 1-1 the final score.

“This was a truly great effort against an academy side, and the boys should feel proud of this result, with solid performances from new lads Jack Huke, Joe Williams and with Bennett-Large-Ephraim doing themselves credit on their trial debut,” commented Cousins. “It’s looking like we will have a very good squad for the coming season, and credit must be given to Jamie Wagland who came to support the players despite not being able to play due to injury sustained in training.

Just over a week on from the friendly, and Darrell Cousins revealed to www.tunbridgewellsfc.co.uk that the club has signed Jack Huke and Joe Williams, and kept three others on to have a closer look at them. “Charlton have made contact since, and are monitoring several players," he added.

“We now have a friendly this coming Sunday away to Bly Spartans, then two more games against Ashford Borough at home on 30th August - 11am, then on 2nd September at home to Jarvis Brook, 6.45pm, after which I will pick my final squad of 16.”
