02/03/2010 - WELLS HAVE THE H-FACTOR

On Saturday, Tunbridge Wells had the ‘H-Factor’ as goalkeeper Callum Hampson and striker Jack Harris put pen to paper to sign first team forms. Both are highly promising products of the U16 set-up at the club, and have helped the youth team to a Cup final and into contention for a league title push. They become the third and fourth players to sign from the current under 16s squad.

Callum has been with us since he played for the U13s,” Darrell Cousins, U16s Coach said. “He was a raw goalkeeper when he came to us, making a transformation after starting out playing as a centre forward for Ridgewaye - but you could see that he had talent. He is another player who works hard on his game; he’s been to Brighton on a six-week trial, and has had other clubs looking at him over the last two seasons. This last 18 months, he has really come on leaps and bounds with training from Greg Thurstans and also Michal Czanner.”

First team manager Martin Larkin has been impressed with Hampson’s application, adding that he has helped with the coaching of some of the younger goalkeepers moving up through the youth system at The Wells. “He knows the areas he needs to work on, and I’m sure he will do so - he certainly has the potential to feature in the future first team plans, and one day be the Tunbridge Wells number 1.”

“This is an exciting opportunity for me to develop further,” Hampson said. “I’m grateful to all the coaches that have helped me over the years - including at Ridgewaye, Greg Thurstans, Michal and all at Tunbridge Wells.”

Meantime, Jack Harris has already hit 15 goals for the U16s this season. Again, he has been with the club since he joined at U13s level, coming in from Tonbridge Invicta - a club that he is still thankful to for his time there.

“I had Jack watched during his Invicta days and was impressed with him - but I had to wait for him to come over to The Wells,” Cousins revealed. “It was worth it. Jack is a big, strong lad. It took him time to get his focus set purely on running the front line, but he has worked hard and is beginning to develop into an excellent forward.

“The extra training he has been given by the first team has brought him on no end. He still needs to work on some areas of his game - he knows that - but he has the right attitude to go and apply himself. Jack is the best forward I have seen doing what he does, and I honestly couldn't ask for any more from him. That’s why signing first team forms is important for his development at this stage. He still has a long way to go to be the finished product, but if he stays focussed I’m sure he can go all the way. Watch out seniors, Harris is on his way!”

“Both these boys deserve all the rewards they are getting, and its great to see them develop with Tunbridge Wells,” Larkin concluded. “A big thank to Darrell and his team for their hard work to identify and then develop raw talent over the years into potential prospects for the first team. That is very much a core value of this club both now, and moving forward into the future.

“These, and the other two recent promotions of youth team players should send a message to all talented youngsters in the Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge area that we are a club committed to nuturing young talent and giving them first team opportunities.”

23/02/2010 - Charter Award For Youth

Tunbridge Wells’ youth set-up has successfully reached the FA Charter Mark.

By being awarded Charter Status the club has been recognised as achieving the best standards of coaching, administration and child protection, as set out by the FA for clubs outside the Football League and Premier League.

In addition, the status will allow the club to continue to complete at the highest level of youth football as possible. The Kent Youth League will only allow charter clubs to compete in the future.

18/02/2010 - Sharman Joins On Loan - OFFICIAL

While it was revealed by external sources in the week that former striker Charlie Sharman was set to re-join the club on Loan from Ryman League Croydon Athletic, the club can now confirm that the correct paperwork has all been completed, and that Sharman will be available to play for the club from this weekend.

The loan agreement will be reviewed on a month-by-month basis.

“I'm delighted to have Charlie on board," first team manager Martin Larkin told www.tunbridgewellsfc.co.uk. "I have heard a lot of good things about him, so hopefully we can bring the best out of him. He will give us a couple of options with the ability to play either up top or out wide. He goes straight into the squad for Saturday.”

15/02/2010 - U16s HEAD INTO CUP FINAL

Tunbridge Wells U16s successfully reached the Causeway Steel Challenge Cup Final, beating Dartford 2-0 at Princes Park.

They will have to wait to learn who their opponents are in the final at Faversham Town FC after the other semi final between Dover Athletic and Ashford Borough was postponed.

"I’m delighted for the players and the coaching staff," first team manager Martin Larkin told www.tunbridgewellsfc.co.uk. "Darrell Cousins and his team have put in years of hard work with those boys, and to see them all developing now into excellent county players, and possible first team players must be a fantastic feeling for them all.

"It's great that they will now have a cup final to show for all their hard efforts, and is great for those in the squad who haven’t had a taste of the first team yet as it will give them a great platform to impress. I really hope we can all get behind them and get as many of us over to Faversham as possible for the final, as days like that have been too few in recent years.

"Well done form everyone in the first team set up."

While a match report is expected shortly, we're sure you will all join us in congratulating Darrell and the lads on this achievement!

17/12/2009 - Second Youth Player Signs

Tunbridge Wells FC has continued its recent policy of signing promising U16 players on First team forms with the signing of defender and youth team captain, Ben Williamson. As with the signing of Ryan Waterman, this latest signing represents a continued commitment to building a side based around local players, while also encouraging the best local players to develop and progress in Senior football.

Like Waterman, Williamson has been training with the first team, and getting a taste for what is involved being a part of the first team set-up, and his potential hasn’t gone un-noticed.

“Ben is an exceptional young talent,” Martin Larkin revealed. “He has been scoring goals from right back for the U16s, and is another one who is training well with the first team squad. He definitely has a bright future if he continues to apply himself as he has been.”

Having put pen to paper at the weekend, Williamson is looking forward to the prospect of developing with the Culverden club. “Being signed for Tunbridge Wells’ First Team gives me a great opportunity to play at a higher level and to improve my football,” he anticipated.

During the five years that he has been working with him, current Tunbridge Wells U16 coach Darrell Cousins is confident Williamson will progress in Senior football.

“Ben was originally a Pembury player who always impressed when I watched him play at the age of 11. He played in the midfield for them, and was also selected for the Crowborough League representative side. Ben is the kind of player you're glad to have on your side - he always gives everything. His fitness is exceptional and over the years he has grown in confidence.

“I decided to switch him to right back, and this really seemed to bring out his potential. He is a tremendous attacking full back, and is our second top goal scorer for the season.

“Training with the senior players has moved him up another gear, and we thank Martin Larkin and his coaching staff for the opportunity they have given all the players. Ben has still got to progress a little, but as he is always willing to learn. I’m sure he will advance to senior football. Ben deserves everything that he achieves. It has been a pleasure to have had him in my squad for the last five years.”
