Wells Dent Bromley's Perfect Start

The U16s set off for another away trip at Bromley following their success at VCD last week, and this one was never going to be easy… Bromley sat at the top off the league undefeated as they welcomed Tunbridge Wells.

Perhaps it was no surprise then that as the game got under way it was the home side that did all the pressuring, and Tunbridge Wells were finding it difficult to get hold of the ball. Bromley had several attacks but with The Wells defence holding firm, they were mainly restricted to long-range efforts.

With twenty minutes on the clock though, The Wells were awarded a free kick on the left of the Bromley penalty area, and a well executed chip by Hopkins found Jack Harris, who controlled the ball with his chest and then dispatched his effort into the net for 1-0.

This seemed to settle The Wells, and they began to have a bit more about them off the ball. Going forward, they always looked dangerous and with the Bromley defence looking a bit shaky, Harris made a surging run into the box. With a defender sliding in taking him out, shouts for a penalty were waived away by the referee to everyone's amazement - including the home team management.

Not to many clear chances were created after that by the visitors, and it was the hosts who came on strong in the last 10 minutes of the half, with Callum Hampson having to make two outstanding saves to keep the wells in front at the break.

Half Time: Bromley 0-1 Tunbridge Wells

Just as they did in the first half, The Wells started on the back foot as Bromley put pressure on them in the second period, and within 5 minutes they were level at 1-1. Spurred on by the leveler, the home side soon took the lead through a mistake from a Wells player - and with a shot from outside the box, the Bromley man to capitalize left Hampson with no chance.

To The Wells’ credit, they stayed claim and started to play their usual passing game, and within 5 minutes they found their reward. A well worked move down the right and a resulting cross found Abbas who hit the ball first time on his right foot, nestling it into the back of the net.

The Wells were now competing well, and the home side seemed to be losing their discipline. With 15 minutes to go another cross from the right found a group of players jostling for the ball, and this time the referee did blow for a penalty.

Up stepped captain Williamson, who calmly dispatched his effort into the top right hand corner to give The Wells a 3-2 lead.

The remainder of the game was described by U16 Coach Darrell Cousins as “Chicken skin time”, as his side held on to the lead till the end.

Full Time: Bromley 2-3 Tunbridge Wells

“This was another good display from the lads in what was a more physical game than last week,” Cousins remarked. “But to also lead, then have to come back from behind showed a lot of character. We must remain focused now - there is still along way to go, and we now visit Deal this coming Sunday.

“With two wins on the bounce, we must not let complacence creep in. Whilst this game in particular was a good team effort, a special mention should be made for Jack Harris, who was outstanding winning headers in defence as well as being the main target man.”
